Founding and Early Years (1952 onwards)
The clinical departments of Surgery were established in 1952, concurrent with the inauguration of the Medical College Hospital
GMC Thiruvananthapuram Dr. R. Kesavan Nair FRCS, who served as the Chief Surgeon at the General Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, was appointed as the Professor of Surgery, thereby formally establishing the Department of Surgery at the college. The General Surgery Department since it’s inception offered comprehensive surgical care for various conditions, from basic procedures to advanced laparoscopic surgeries, with multiple surgical units, conducts specialty clinics for Vascular, Breast, Thyroid diseases. They handle a wide range of open and minimally invasive surgeries serving as a major teaching hospital with experienced faculty and modern facilities teaching for both MBBS and PG students, conducting CMEs, workshops and contributing to research
